experiments<\/strong> and revisit their (not too distant) past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that &#8220;<strong>The Astonishing<\/strong>&#8221; has puzzled their fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was something almost completely different to what everybody was used to listen to from the golden boys of the <strong>progressive<\/strong> rock and metal scene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like any other <strong>Dream Theater<\/strong> album, however, it was difficult to come to any conclusion about the album by just one listening session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distance Over Time <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>This article though is not about \u201c<strong>The Astonishing<\/strong>\u201d, rather than their most recent release, \u201c<strong>Distance Over Time<\/strong>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a personal note,<strong> Dream Theater<\/strong> being the band that introduced me to the <strong>heavy metal scene<\/strong> and genres, my expectations from the New Yorkers are the highest. <strong><em>Always<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first track of the album called \u201c<strong>Untethered Angel<\/strong>\u201d made me feel a sense of refreshment, a feeling of returning to their roots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is considered a <strong>classic progressive<\/strong> <strong>Dream Theater-ish song<\/strong>, featuring the elements and atmosphere one expects from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is not enough to make a statement about the context, quality and level of this album. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And at that point comes the second track, to sweep you off your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, \u201c<strong>Paralyzed<\/strong>\u201d is one of the best songs in the album, one of the highest and brightest moments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is as <strong>heavy as expected<\/strong> and, at the same time, <strong>melodic<\/strong> in such a way that doesn\u2019t allow you to be bored or tired at any second of the whole song. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having all the characteristics that have made <strong>Dream Theater<\/strong> one of the top bands for the past <strong>30 or so years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two following tracks, \u201c<strong>Fall Into The Light<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Barstool Warrior<\/strong>\u201d, the latter considered another one of the best tracks in this album, bring back a feeling of \u201c<strong>Black Clouds<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Silver Linings<\/strong>\u201d era with their melodic virtuosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c<strong>Barstool Warrior<\/strong>\u201d especially, reminded me of \u201c<strong>The Count of Tuscany<\/strong>\u201d both atmospherically and lyrically. Besides, both songs are written by <strong>John Petrucci<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On \u201c<strong>Room 137<\/strong>\u201d the band seems to move to an even <strong>more heavy direction<\/strong> on melody and lyrics, kind of like the \u201c<strong>Train of Thought<\/strong>\u201d era, however somewhere along the way this direction went missing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already after the first chorus the song seems to be repeating itself both in lyrics and melody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After that? Chaos. The fact that after a number of listening sessions of this album, only the first 4 tracks stuck with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These tracks set the tone for the album initially, but this tone remains the same constantly throughout the whole album. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Very Dream Theater unlike.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>I grew up listening to magnificent albums such as <strong>Images and Word<\/strong>s, <strong>Metropolis pt. 2<\/strong>, <strong>Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence<\/strong>, <strong>Octavarium<\/strong> (the album that, in my opinion, contains and best describes the musical characteristincs of <strong>Dream Theater<\/strong> as a whole, better than any other).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In each one of their previous albums you could feel every song to be special, as if being the best among the best. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201c<strong>Distance Over Time<\/strong>\u201d the band seems to be<em> trying to go back to something that is not them anymore<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately <strong>Dream Theater<\/strong> have given me the impression that the only thing in their mind musically and inspirationally is experimenting, a feeling that is clearly expressed in \u201c<strong>The Astonishing<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be seen nowadays, as they look to be out of new inspirations and ideas and found a path on the first 2-3 tracks of the album and followed the exact same path throughout the rest of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift in focus, which can be seen as clearly as ever now, became clearer upon the departure of <strong>Mike Portnoy<\/strong>, when <strong>Dream Theater<\/strong> released their 12<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;album, the first with new drummer <strong>Mike Mangini,<\/strong> called \u201c<strong>Dream Theater<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, in my opinion, <em><strong>when a band releases an album with their name and it is not a debut album, they seem to have already run out of ideas and inspirations<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n  <div class=\"related-post grid\">\r\n        <div class=\"headline\">Related Post<\/div>\r\n    <div class=\"post-list \">\r\n\r\n            <div class=\"item\">\r\n          \r\n  <a class=\"title post_title\"  title=\"Bullet for My Valentine In Greece\" href=\"https:\/\/r1vibes-bench.vust.cloud\/el\/2019\/04\/01\/bullet-for-my-valentine-in-greece\/?related_post_from=1788\">\r\n        Bullet for My Valentine In Greece  <\/a>\r\n\r\n        <\/div>\r\n              <div class=\"item\">\r\n          \r\n  <a class=\"title post_title\"  title=\"Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace &#038;
